Individual ism

At work recently a group of people have got together and decided they don't like this other person and now their day is consumed with nasty remarks and gossip about said person. This really pisses me off because the person they have chosen to target has done little to deserve it. In fact the only thing that the person has done is been more popular with some other people in the office- and the established hierarchy don't like this!
The weird bit is most of these people I used to consider to be nice people. They were always nice towards me and seemed to generally care about me and other workers in our dept. what makes nice people suddenly turn into scathing nit pickers? I think a lot of it is some of them are afraid that they will be picked on if they go against the main ringleaders (who are real bitches). This is the same shit that I saw in high school with the popular kids, you'd think that in a workplace with mature people all over the age of 30 it would be a thing of the past? Apparently not. It seems I am doomed to put up with this crap forever. So, I have chosen to do the exact opposite of what everyone in the office does in negative circumstances Ie if they are mean to someone I will befriend them. I'm really sick to death of putting up with this crap and I'm not afraid to be criticised by them or anyone else for not following the status quo.
